NegrocanNeil joined Negrocan in 1994 which was the creation of Andres Lafone - original bassist with Snowboy. The group's music is built around a dance style from Uruguay called Candombe. Formerly it was associated with a large housing block called " Medio Mundo " in Montevideo. Many black and white poor people lived there and it was central to the processions that took place in Carnival and on other festive occasions. This tradition, alongside a strong jazz sensibility and inspiration from Cuba and Brazil goes to make up the core musical elements of the group. The lineup originally was percussion heavy with 3 Tamboriles - 'Piano, Repique and Chico' ( Congas native to Uruguay ) played by Ulises Garcia, Beco Techera and Jorge Almonacid giving a very folkloric sound to the group. However by the time the first Album - 'Medio Mundo' was recorded the lineup had changed slightly to accommodate for the Brazilian element of the group. The group consisted of Liliana Chachian on lead vocals, Davide Giovannini on Drums/B.V's Ulises Garcia on Tamboriles and lead vocal, Carlos Fuentes on Percussion and Andy on Bass and B.V's. The first Album saw an overnight smash hit with club classic 'Aquela Esquina' being taken onto a compilation album which sold over a 100,000 copies along side artists such as the great 'Airto' . The second album was released in May 2000 simply entitled - 'Negrocan' and is available on ' Viceroy Records .' |
